Green Building

Our Commitment to Energy Efficiency

At the Fort Collins Housing Authority, we believe that affordable housing should not compromise on important resource conservation and healthful living benefits available through green building practices. Starting in 2009 we began a focused effort to incorporate green building best practices into our properties and we are fully committed to incorporating this approach into future projects.

Our commitment to green building includes the following practices, for example:

  • Performing energy audits on our units to identify opportunities for improvements.
  • Recycling household trash, seasonal yard waste and building materials.
  • Installing compact fluorescent lighting, low-flow faucets and showerheads and Energy Star appliances.
  • Using low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) cabinetry, countertops and paint.
  • Incorporating geothermal and photovoltaic technologies into new construction and rehabilitation project designs.
  • Maintaining clotheslines for air drying and mulching lawn clippings back into the lawn.
  • Participating in programs that promote energy conservation, such as the Platte River Power Authority’s LightenUP Program.
  • Seeking funding for green building projects through sources such as Energy Outreach Colorado and the Governor’s Energy Office.

The Village on Stanford Road - A Model of Sustainability in Affordable Housing

With community support and the help of funders and partners, the Fort Collins Housing Authority acquired and renovated an apartment complex built in the 1970s, creating a model of sustainability in multifamily housing. The Village on Stanford Road incorporates building and landscape design features and heating and cooling systems that conserve energy and contain utility costs. Design choices place a high value on the health and safety of residents and make the new complex an attractive addition to the neighborhood. The financing strategy for the project guarantees permanent affordability to residents earning 30% to 60% of area median income.

For more information about this project, which was completed in 2010, download our project flyer: Village on Stanford Road Flyer.
