Self-Sufficiency
Programs
The self-sufficiency programs are designed to help families receiving housing
assistance become economically self-sufficient and independent of welfare
through classes in:
- life skills development
- credit counseling
- parenting
- classes that help participants reach their goals
Participants in these programs work individually with a case manager to set
and meet goals that will help them move towards self-sufficiency.
Family Self-Sufficiency: Families seeking economic
self-sufficiency and independence from public assistance can apply for support
services through the Family Self-Sufficiency program. With the support and
coaching of a case manager, participants work to set and meet goals that will
help them move toward self-sufficiency. Resources and referrals include credit
counseling, health care resources, life skills development, effective parenting
programs, childcare resources, employment and training guidance, and mentoring.
A further incentive toward reaching goals is the Escrow Account. As
earned income increases, the family's rent portion increases. However, if
participating in Family Self-Sufficiency, the increase in rent goes into an
escrow account, a type of savings account. Upon successful completion of the
program, the participant receives the full amount of their escrow, including
interest. Successful completion of the program means the family has met all
goals and is no longer on public assistance.
