Application Process
Applicants are placed on the FCHA wait list by date and time. Once a person reaches the top of the wait list he/she will be contacted by mail for an initial interview to verify eligibility.
Changes in the applicant's address, income, or family composition need to be reported by filling out a Wait List Change Form. It is the responsibility of the applicant to keep this information current.
Applications and appointments are available Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Process:
- Fill out an application at FCHA's main office at 1715 West Mountain Avenue.
- Your application information is entered into the Housing Authority's computer database. Each program has a separate waiting list. Your name will be added to the waiting list for each program you have chosen.
- When your name nears the top of a program waiting list, you will be sent a letter. This letter will specify which program you are currently being considered. For example, you may have signed up for all programs, but we may send you a letter to tell you your name is at the top of the Fort Collins Public Housing waiting list only. Your status on other waiting lists is not affected by this letter.
- You will also be sent an Eligibility Packet with the letter. This packet includes forms to update us on your current household members and total income. You will need to declare every household member's citizenship status. Be assured, we often work with non-citizens; we simply need the information to determine how much financial assistance to provide to your household.
- When you meet with our staff to turn in your Eligibility Packet, we send for copies of arrest records (CBI report) for all adults in your household. We will deny your application for housing if any adult household member has arrests within the past five years for violent or drug-related criminal activity, although we may take into account older arrests depending on the seriousness of the offense. We may also take any successful treatment into consideration.
- When you have completed the Eligibility Packet and passed the criminal background check, you will be contacted by a Housing Coordinator for the program. For the Housing Choice Voucher program, you will next attend an informational meeting, at which time you receive your Voucher and instructions on how to complete the Voucher process to lease an appropriate rental home. For Public Housing, you will receive a letter stating that you are preapproved for the program, and what bedroom-size home we will lease to you when we have a vacancy. For Villages, the Northern Hotel, and the SROs, you may be contacted immediately with an offer of housing, depending on availability.
